Rebecca Duvick: Creating Meaningful Membership

A massive career transition was the catalyst that led Rebecca Duvick to finally join TeamWomen.

She’d known about the organization for years but didn’t become an official member until 2019.

In 2019, Rebecca decided to make a major career switch and transitioned into the nonprofit sector. With her background in software from the 20+ years in the tech industry, she had the skills. What she lacked was a network.

So she joined TeamWomen.

“I was ready to have a deeper connection.”

In 2020, Rebecca joined the Membership Committee and her work there has helped dozens of other women find a deeper connection as well.

Rebecca was made for this.

Rebecca worked for three different software companies during her career in the tech industry. It was intense, demanding work that she loved. Until she didn’t.

“It was 24×7. I wanted to get off the treadmill. I loved it because it was intense and challenging, but I lost the love over time and I needed a break,” she told TeamWomen.

Her transition led her to a remote position with PCs for People, a nonprofit dedicated to refurbishing computers for low-income families. Her position was the perfect dovetail with her technology background, and she enjoyed the mission-driven work.

Rebecca’s background in technology and her natural love of helping people are just some of the reasons she’s such an asset to the TeamWomen community.

Upon joining the membership committee in 2020, TeamWomen, like the rest of the world, realized they needed to pivot during the uncertainty of COVID-19.

As the world reckoned with the pandemic, TeamWomen saw a steep decline in attendance at major events. Executive Director Katy Burke proposed the idea of a virtual New Member Orientation. Rebecca volunteered to co-host, and thus a TeamWomen dynamic duo was born.

The virtual New Member Orientation walks new members through the pillars of TeamWomen membership, highlighting TeamWomen’s various programs, events, and opportunities to get involved.

The virtual orientation practices what TeamWomen preaches: community. Each orientation includes a round of speed networking to foster connections among the attendees.

Participants learn about everything TeamWomen offers, from flagship events like the annual conference and galas to Power Luncheons, Energy Breakfasts, and the mentorship program.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, Rebecca said, with many members feeling more informed and inspired to engage with the organization in meaningful ways.

The New Member Orientation continues to thrive with a robust number of new members each quarter.

“Together, we have created a welcoming space where new members can not only learn how to get involved with TeamWomen but also connect and build relationships with each other,” Rebecca said.

Today, Rebecca is working for Bluebirds & Blooms, a company on her ‘someday list’.

When PCs for People decided to end remote work, Rebecca found herself at yet another crossroads.

She decided to leave PCs for People without another job, and almost immediately, another opportunity came into her purview, thanks to her network.

Bluebirds & Blooms is a nonprofit organization that designs flowers donated from the community into bouquets for memory care residents.

Over the past year, Rebecca has helped Bluebirds & Blooms develop private events that bring businesses and groups together for a meaningful cause. Today she is more fulfilled than at any point in her career, and often tells people that when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.

“I traded my paycheck for purpose.”
